Installing on Google Cloud Platform

Installing on Google Cloud Platform

Prerequisites

Installing Jenkins X on Google Cloud Platform Shell requires the following supported services installed and configured prior to installation:

  • A Google Cloud Platform (GCP) account. You can sign up for the GCP free trial, which lasts 12 months, and currently offers US$300 of credit.

  • Also ensure you have created a GCP project for your CloudBees Jenkins X Distribution installation. It is recommended that you create a new GCP project, separate from your other development and production clusters.

Installing

To run jx commands from the GCP Cloud Shell, install the CloudBees Jenkins X Distribution binaries from the GitHub repository and install it via GCP shell commands:

  1. Open the GCP Cloud Shell, and choose your GCP project for CloudBees Jenkins X Distribution.

    Note
It is highly recommended that you use Google Chrome browser with GCP Cloud Shell, as you may experience issues using other browsers.
  2. Download the jx binary archive by downloading the latest version by command-line using curl and pipe (|) the compressed archive to the tar command:

    curl -L https://storage.googleapis.com/artifacts.jenkinsxio.appspot.com/binaries/cjxd/latest/jx-linux-amd64.tar.gz | tar xzv
  3. Install the jx binary by moving it to a location in your executable path using the mv command:

    sudo mv jx /usr/local/bin
  4. Ensure you are using the correct binary and executable path with the which command:

    which jx

Follow the instructions in the Creating a Jenkins X cluster document to continue the cluster process.
